Breaking news: Philadelphia Eagles top wide receiver sign a blockbuster trade to join the Miami Dolphins.

The season of trade rumors is already underway, and the most recent one is about a possible blockbuster trade that would send DeVonta Smith, the top wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, to the Miami Dolphins. A deeper look shows why the Eagles, who have systematically added great cornerback depth this summer, would not be well served by the suggested deal, despite the fact that it has created excitement in some quarters. In the hypothetical deal, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, a three-time All-Pro with a $72 million contract, would be sent to Miami in exchange for Smith, the Eagles’ former first-round selection (10th overall in 2021). Although it may sound tempting to acquire a player of Ramsey’s ability on paper, this scenario is extremely unlikely given the Eagles’ recent defensive signings.
Since Darius Slay left for the Pittsburgh Steelers this summer, Philadelphia has made smart changes to their secondary. The Eagles currently have a strong rotation of cornerbacks that includes Adoree Jackson, a seasoned veteran cornerback who consistently offers depth and leadership in the secondary; Cooper DeJean, a versatile defensive back who has excelled in the slot and demonstrated the ability to play multiple positions; and Quinyon Mitchell, their highly sought-after first-round pick who has rapidly established himself as a boundary cornerback with shutdown potential. Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator, has a strong cornerback group with this trio that blends youth, adaptability, and experience, negating the need to acquire an elderly, costly CB like Ramsey.
It would go against Philadelphia’s youth program to trade a defender who is 30 years old for a 26-year-old rising star. The Eagles’ passing offense would be severely weakened and they would become too reliant on Brown if Smith were to go. Blockbuster moves are a topic of lively offseason debate, but this scenario ignores Philadelphia’s well-thought-out personnel plan. The Eagles have maintained offensive firepower with their receiving tandem while systematically increasing cornerback depth through the draft and free agency. Howie Roseman, the general manager, has shown astute talent assessment, especially in appreciating the potential of domestic talents like Smith. Years of squad building and talent development would be jeopardized if Smith were traded to Miami for Ramsey.
