Bo Bichette, the shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, hopes to have a successful 2025 season. The two-time All-Star played in just 81 games last season and set career lows in a number of categories. Bichette only hit.225 last season, after being an All-Star in 2023 and earning down-ballot MVP votes (16th place finish). Since his MLB debut in 2019, the former second-round choice has been regarded as one of the game’s greatest offensive shortstops; his 72 OPS+ was the first below-average total of his career.

Bichette is in the last year of his deal, which should be ample incentive to rebuild himself as a star-caliber infielder.

While his teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has garnered much of the contract extension hype, Bichette likewise remains without a long-term pact. Last week, Jon Heyman of the New York Post said Bichette is not likely to re-sign with Toronto this summer.

“Word is Bo Bichette is destined for free agency, however, and likely to leave,” he stated.

In light of this information, the New York Yankees must make a crucial choice. Although Anthony Volpe appears to be the team’s shortstop, Jim Bowden of The Athletic predicted on March 25 that Bichette will end up in New York as the team’s third baseman. Bowden said, “Bo Bichette signs a five-year, $147 million deal to play third base for the Yankees,” as one of his 25 2025 predictions.

It would be a significant choice to commit $147 million to Bichette, but it would be even more significant to do so while assigning him to a position where he has never played a major league inning. Bichette has only played shortstop in 594 MLB games on the field during his career.

Third base has been a revolving door for New York since Alex Rodriguez held down that position for nearly a decade. The best version of Bichette would slot in nicely to New York’s lineup, but a position change would likely be required.
