Breaking news: The New York Giants sign standout veteran quarterback to a one-year contract for up to $21 million ($10 million guaranteed).
Next season, the previous standout veteran quarterback will compete in the NFC East.
According to many media sources, quarterback Russell Wilson is joining the New York Giants on a one-year contract for up to $21 million ($10 million guaranteed).
Wilson will start his 14th NFL season at the age of 36. He had a 104-53-1 record in his first 10 games with the Seahawks. He then had two poor seasons with the Broncos (11-19) and one lackluster season with the Steelers (6-5). Wilson completed 214 of 336 passes (63.7%) in 2024, gaining 2482 yards (7.4 YPA), 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. With an average of 14.1 running yards per game and 3.6 yards per carry, he also had his poorest season as a rusher. In EPA per play, he came in twenty-first.
The Giants also recently signed Jameis Winston to a two-year deal worth $8 million. The quarterback depth chart now looks like this:
Although Wilson was a superb quarterback in his early career, one might argue that he is currently just slightly superior to Winston, and the Giants are undoubtedly out of the running for the Super Bowl, let alone the playoffs. Wilson’s signing seems like a costly waste. What specifically will he bring to this team? The bright side, I suppose, for Giants fans is… If nothing else, this eliminates their last chance to sign Aaron Rodgers.
Naturally, the next question is: Does this mean the Giants won’t be able to choose a quarterback in the 2025 draft? I personally don’t think so. The likelihood that head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen will remain in their positions beyond 2025 depends on that component.
