Breaking news: Pete Alonso Issues a Two-Word Message Following a Significant Career Choice
The MLB offseason was successful for the New York Mets. By offering outfielder Juan Soto, 26, a 15-year contract for $765 million, New York made the biggest baseball deal ever. Although it makes sense that Soto garnered the most of the headlines this offseason, New York made other moves as well. The Mets retained right-handed slugger Pete Alonso in New York by re-signing him to a two-year, $54 million contract.
Alonso’s free agency progressed gradually, but in the end, he decided to stay with the Mets, where he has played for the past six years. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Alonso, a four-time All-Star, is predicted to finish third this season, behind Francisco Lindor and Soto.
Alonso was questioned candidly about his significant career choice to rejoin the Mets in an exclusive interview with The Post. The 30-year-old first baseman gave a succinct response, stating his position in just two words.
“Never left,” said Alonso.
When asked why he didn’t get the $200 million deal that some people thought his market would require, Alonso gave a more thorough explanation.
“Sometimes, it’s not necessarily the perfect route,” Alonso stated. “But I’m more than happy. It will work out if I’m well and performing. After this season, Alonso may become a free agent once more because he has a 2026 player option. With a lifetime OPS of.854, the two-time Home Run Derby winner is ranked 19th among current batters. Alonso informed Heyman that he might negotiate a contract worth even more than the $54 million he agreed to this winter if he had a successful season.
