Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu were supposed to share the hot corner when the New York Yankees started the season. LeMahieu, who was expected to shoulder most of the responsibility, is recovering after a disappointing season marred by injuries. But according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, LeMahieu hurt his calf in a spring training game against the Houston Astros. The Yankees may learn from LeMahieu’s most recent ailment that depending on the 36-year-old isn’t always a good idea. Hoch said that LeMahieu’s injury was “at least a little concerning,” as manager Aaron Boone put it. The Yankees could have to finally improve their infield if LeMahieu begins the season on the disabled list.

Ke'Bryan Hayes goes on injured list with low back inflammation

While Cabrera only hit.247/.296/.365 last season, the Yankees could easily use him to play a bigger role. Rumor had it that the Yankees were looking to add a third baseman, and now they could have the motivation to do so. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees are not interested in St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, citing his salary as one of the reasons.

Pittsburgh Pirates star Ke’Bryan Hayes is a potentially unexpected and less expensive choice. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette verified earlier this summer that Hayes had not made a trade request. Michael Kay, the Yankees’ play-by-play commentator, disclosed on the “Michael Kay Show” that Hayes’ father, Charlie Hayes, is not pleased with his progress in Pittsburgh.

According to Kay, “Ke’Bryan Hayes is a defensive magician at third base,” on January 15. “He’s clearly unhappy in Pittsburgh, but his hitting isn’t what it should be. When the Yankees visited Pittsburgh a few years back, I spoke with Charlie, and he seemed baffled by some of the things they do there with the batters. In any event, if I were the Yankees, I would phone the Pirates and ask, “What do you want?”

In 2022, Hayes agreed to a $70 million, eight-year deal. He would not overburden the Yankees’ salary as a younger substitute for Arenado. Additionally, the club has control of him till 2030. He would provide the Yankees with a dependable player to complete their infield, but he would seek many top 30 prospects in exchange.
