A former pitcher for the New York Yankees has joined the Boston Red Sox. Nick Burdi, a veteran reliever, announced his arrival to the Red Sox on Instagram. Burdi, 32, pitched 9.2 innings for the Yankees and finished 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA and 12 strikeouts. Chris Cotillo of MassLive claims that Burdi is at minor league camp. He is not invited to spring training as part of his contract.
It’s unclear if Burdi has an opt-out clause in his contract. Burdi, a 2014 second-round selection, has a 6.48 ERA in 31 games pitched. In addition to pitching for the Chicago Cubs, he made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018.
Burdi’s control is his biggest problem; in his 25 career innings, he has walked 19. Burdi is a seasoned depth arm at best who sometimes showed off for the Yankees. He will most likely start the season in Triple-A, most likely as a middle reliever or setup. Since his last season at Louisville in 2014, Burdi has not been a closer.
Regretfully, Burdi has been on the injured list for a large portion of his professional career. He underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in 2019 and Tommy John surgery in May 2017 and October 2020. Following an emergency appendectomy, Burdi missed the most of 2023 while playing with the Cubs. After May 23, Burdi was sidelined due to a hip ailment.
