Steelers Named Landing Spot for Shedeur Sanders

It makes too much sense, in a sense, and there are all the indicators. The Raiders have been playing footsy with Colorado star Shedeur Sanders for the better part of the last year, and they desperately need a quarterback. Sanders has made no bones about his fondness for the Raiders as an organization, including a trip to Las Vegas in December in which he displayed a photo of Allegiant Stadium, home of the Raiders, with the description, “Legendary.” At a Las Vegas Aces game in October, he also had a meeting with Raiders owner Mark Davis. Davis said to him at the time, “Who knows? You could already be at home.”

Sanders was exceptional last season at Colorado, when he led the Big 12 in completions and attempts (353-for-477) and topped the country in accuracy, with a 74.0% completion percentage. He topped the league, too, with 318.0 yards per game and a 168.2 rating.

But one of the great issues for the Raiders, even as we are still two months off from the NFL draft, is whether Sanders will be on the board when the Raiders choose at No. 6. With the Titans, Browns, and Giants owning the top three selections and all in need of a quarterback, it is assumed that Cam Ward will be selected as the first quarterback in this draft.

There has been talk that the Raiders might need to move up from No. 6 to acquire Sanders, but former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has warned the Raiders not to do so. “I don’t like it because of the amount that it would take to move up,” Hasselbeck said on Monday on ESPN’s “Get Up” show. “A lot of people saying he could end up being No. 1 overall-to move that much, even if you’re moving two or three spots up.” If none of those three picks select Sanders, the Patriots and Jaguars will likely bypass quarterbacks unless a trade up occurs by a quarterback-needy team like the Jets.

“I don’t really think that the delta between Shedeur and this next group of quarterbacks-Tyler Shough, Kyle McCord, Jaxson Dart-I don’t think it’s going to be that significant through the evaluation process for everybody,” Hasselbeck said, “so I think giving up so much to move just a few spots in the first round when you really don’t know, to me, it just doesn’t feel like it is worth it.” The Raiders have the No. 37 overall pick in this draft, along with two third-round picks (No. 68 and 73). Alternatively, Hasselbeck suggests that the Raiders should wait and select one of the second-tier quarterbacks later in the draft.
