Nicholas Morrow: 'There's no substitute for work'

As the playoffs approach, the Bills are turning to the veteran well because depth is once again an issue.

The Buffalo Bills re-signed veteran linebacker Nicholas Morrow due to the growing number of injuries at the linebacker position. ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg covered it Monday.

The 29-year-old Morrow first joined Buffalo in March. During the first 13 weeks of the season, he was a member of the team’s original roster. He played on 182 plays, or 65% of the team’s total during that period, and largely on special teams. 44 defensive snaps, or 6% of the team’s total, were played by him as well. Before being cut, Morrow only had three tackles during the season.

The Bills needed depth at linebacker with Matt Milano recovering from a groin injury, Dorian Williams dealing with an elbow problem, and Baylon Spector dealing with problems in both calves. Milano has only played in three games after missing more than a year due to knee, fibula, and pectoral injuries.

When the Bills pulled Morrow out of retirement last season to provide depth at the postseason, he wasn’t semi-retired and getting ready to take a family vacation like A.J. Klein was. Morrow is a seasoned presence who knows the defense.

Morrow should not have to play every down against the Kansas City Chiefs if the Bills are healthy enough. Hopefully, Morrow won’t have to be the main coverage man against Travis Kelce, a future Hall of Fame tight end, if the Bills are healthy enough. Morrow will probably return to play special teams snaps.

On Monday afternoon, head coach Sean McDermott informed media that Spector is now on a week-to-week basis due to his injury status. Spector, 26, has made four starts in 11 games so far this season. Throughout 291 defensive snaps and 157 special teams snaps in 2024, he has already recorded 40 tackles, two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one quarterback hit, and one fumble recovery.
