ESPN: The Yankees made a massive deal to sign All-Star Infielder Worth $200 Million.
The New York Yankees are using the money they saved to add talent to their squad after losing a heavyweight free agent match against slugger Juan Soto.
Third baseman Alex Bregman, most recently of the Houston Astros, is regarded as the greatest position player still available on the free agency market, and New York is now in the running for him after making many significant signings in recent days.
On Thursday, December 19, ESPN’s Jeff Passan outlined the contract that the 30-year-old Bregman is expected to sign and how he may fit in with a few large market clubs who still have money to spend as the year draws to a close.
“Bregman may also get a payout of up to $200 million. Because many clubs still have a lot of money to spend, [his market is] still strong,” Passan wrote. “A third baseman is needed by the [Toronto] Blue Jays. The same is true with the Boston Red Sox. Jazz Chisholm Jr. might be moved from third to second base by the Yankees, while Mark Vientos could be moved to first base by the [New York] Mets in a similar infield shuffle.
Bregman’s nine-year MLB career has earned him two All-Star selections (in 2018 and 2019) and two World Series titles (in 2017 and 2022). Last season, the infielder was also named a Gold Glove.
According to Baseball Reference, his career batting average is.272, along with a.366 on-base percentage and a.483 slugging percentage.
