ESPN: Dan Campbell Provides an Unexpected Injury Update, Paving the Way for favorite stars’ return.
The head coach of the Lions informed reporters on Wednesday that Montgomery is looking for a third opinion about his ailing knee.
When it was announced earlier this week that running back David Montgomery would miss the remainder of the season due to a season-ending knee injury, the Detroit Lions’ offense was dealt a severe blow.
During the Buffalo Bills’ home loss last week, Montgomery sustained an MCL injury. The Lions’ offense and rushing game would suffer greatly if the veteran running back were to miss the remainder of the season and the playoffs.
The seasoned running back did provide some optimism, though, when he told reporters at his coat on Tuesday that he hoped to make it back for the final stretch run.
The Detroit fan base can feel encouraged after Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave the media a similar update on Wednesday.
Lions News: David Montgomery’s Knee Injury Will Give Him a Third Option
Tim Twentyman claims that Campbell stated that Montgomery has not yet been placed on injured reserve because he is receiving a third option on his knee.
One encouraging indication that Montgomery could make a comeback soon or during the playoffs is the fact that he is still looking for views and is not on injured leave. Together with Jahmyr Gibbs, Montgomery forms a potent running back tandem in the Lions’ backfield, which has made Detroit one of the league’s finest all-around offenses.
The Lions rank second in running touchdowns (23) this season, behind the Philadelphia Eagles (26) and the Bills (28), but sixth in rushing (143.7 yards per game). Montgomery has contributed 1,116 scrimmage yards and nearly half of those touchdowns (12).
Montgomery will undoubtedly be missed by the Lions going into their game against the Chicago Bears this weekend. But with Gibbs at the forefront, Detroit’s ground assault shouldn’t lag.
Campbell has already stated that the Lions will have to rely on youngster Sione Vaki and Craig Reynolds to match Montgomery’s output, which won’t be simple.
Nevertheless, Montgomery and the other injured Lions may make a quick comeback if the Lions defeat the Bears on Sunday and end the regular season strongly in an attempt to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
