Cubs hiring a minor league coach from the Yankees Jose Javier as coach of first base

Ahead of the winter meetings, Cubs manager Craig Counsell is completing his coaching staff. According to reports on Friday, the Cubs want to hire Jose Javier, a former minor league instructor for the Yankees, as their first base coach.

The Triple- Crown of the YankeesSince completing his minor-league playing career in 2015, Javier has been a defensive coach for the past two seasons, mostly coaching defense and baserunning at different levels of their farm system.

Javier also served as coach of the Mesa Solar Sox for the 2022 Arizona Fall League season, which included prospects for position players Owen Caissie, Brennen Davis, Matt Mervis, and BJ Murray from the Cubs.

Mike Napoli, one of the coaches the Cubs fired immediately following the season, had previously been the team’s first-base coach.

The arrival of Javier completes the Cubs’ primary on-field coaching staff. As previously verified by sources, the organization has already elevated Casey Jacobson from senior coordinator of pitching development to major-league staff, promoted field coordinator Mark Strittmatter to bullpen coach, and hired Quintin Berry, a former Brewers first base coach, as third base coach.

The club is anticipated to make the official announcement of Counsell’s 2025 coaching staff on Monday.
