CBS Sports: A 49ers linebacker revealed his predicaments while playing for the team.
Fred Warner, a linebacker with the San Francisco 49ers, revealed on Wednesday that he had been playing since September despite having a shattered ankle bone.
According to Warner, the injury occurred during the first half of San Francisco’s Week 4 victory over the New England Patriots. Although he did not miss any games, he was on the injury report for the next two weeks after missing the second half of the game.
“I deal with it in every game,” Warner remarked. Just to be able to roll, I climb on that table before every game and have it shot up. It’s not an excuse, though. It simply is what it is. The NFL is that. You won’t be in good health. You must go out there, figure out how to perform, play at a high level, and win each and every week.
Warner’s performance has suffered after the injury. He recorded three forced fumbles, one sack, four passes defensed, and two interceptions, one of which he recovered for a score, in his first four games.
However, he has only had two passes defensed and one forced fumble in his previous seven games, with no interceptions or sacks.
According to Pro Football Focus, Warner has also missed nine of his eleven tackles since the injury, including four against Green Bay last week. In his previous seven games, he has also struggled with covering, giving up 31 receptions on 31 targets. He only allowed four receptions on 14 targets in his first four games.
Since joining the NFL in 2018, Warner, a three-time All-Pro, has never missed a game. He has no intention of missing any games in spite of the injury.
“A bone that has been fractured will typically not be able to heal itself if you just keep playing on it,” he stated. “You just have to keep fighting through it.”
