The case for the Dodgers to sign Walker Buehler

It’s possible that the New York Yankees are resorting to the proverb “If you can’t beat ’em, sign ’em.”

This week, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi writes that the Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers free agency right-hander Walker Buehler have “some mutual interest.” The Yankees are trying to strengthen their rotation this offseason, according to Morosi.

This past postseason, the 30-year-old Buehler—a two-time MLB All-Star—was a huge pain in the Yankees’ side. He came back in the ninth inning of Game 5 to earn the save and formally remove the Yankees from title contention after pitching five scoreless innings to help the Dodgers defeat the Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series.

Despite having a clearly concerning injury history (having undergone two Tommy John surgeries) and a bloated 5.38 ERA in the 2024 regular season, Buehler is a major playoff performer who might be a good fit for the Yankees on an incentive-rich contract. Additionally, the Yankees are a far more appealing destination than the other outside team that was rumored to be interested in Buehler.
