CBS Sports: “You are awful, Jerry Jones!” Cowboys Are Attacked by McAfee on ESPN
The Dallas Cowboys have more on the line than a divisional victory as they play the Washington Commanders in Week 12 of the NFC East. Owner Jerry Jones has been under increased scrutiny due to a series of poor performances, and his leadership has been the subject of growing criticism. Due to erratic play and injuries, including the loss of their top quarterback due to a detached hamstring, Dallas has had a challenging season. Poor on-field performance, especially at AT&T Stadium, where the Cowboys have lost five straight games by 20 points or more, has made these difficulties even worse.
Jones has faced criticism for his personnel choices after declaring the Cowboys were “all-in” prior to the season. The roster is thin because the organization made few acquisitions and parted ways with 11 veterans in the winter. Pat McAfee, a former NFL punter, has been among the unrelenting critics.
McAfee described the team’s difficulties on The Pat McAfee Show, highlighting their inability to maintain a lead at home for longer than two minutes and fifteen seconds during the season. In a contentious episode, McAfee didn’t mince words. “Your team sucks, your building sucks, and a lot of people are starting to think you suck.” McAfee stated.
Additionally, McAfee cited kicker Brandon Aubrey’s first missed field goal at home, which happened after the field was changed for a well-known boxing event, perhaps impacting his balance. This, along with other concerns like a broken roof and bright sunshine in the stadium, highlighted structural issues that were out of the players’ control.
In order to save their season and quell the mounting criticism, the Cowboys now have a crucial game against the Commanders. Dallas needs to find answers on the field to ease pressure and growing criticism now that it appears they have no chance of making the playoffs.
