CBS Sports: Lions Sensational Player, Jared Goff Robbed …..
It took a special performance from a special player for Jared Goff to miss out on NFC Offensive Player of the Week after he produced a perfect passer rating in Week 11.
In Week 11, the Detroit Lions’ offense amassed 645 yards and scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions, destroying the Jacksonville Jaguars 52–6. Jared Goff, who went 24-for-29 for 412 yards and four touchdowns with a perfect passer rating of 158.3, also swiftly restored his place in the MVP discussion.
After going 18 for 18 against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4, Goff was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. He appeared certain to win it again based on his performance in Week 11.
Not at all.
On Wednesday, the Week 11 Player of the Week honors were revealed. After running for 138 yards and three touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns, Saints tight end Taysom Hill was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. In addition, he completed a pass for 18 yards on two of his quarterbacking tries (the other pass was intercepted) and had eight receptions for 50 yards.
All Hill can do is shortchange by being called a tight end. Last Sunday, he alternated between tight end, quarterback, wide receiver, running back, and fullback for his offensive snaps. He plays a lot of special teams as well.
Jared Goff won Week 11’s NFC Offensive Player of the Week thanks to a special effort.
In addition to his mediocre performance against the Jaguars, Goff’s EPA (Expected Points Added) was the highest for a quarterback in a game this season (+34.8), marking the seventh time in NFL history that a quarterback has recorded over 400 yards and a perfect passer rating in a game (Goff has now done it twice).
Hill lost a fumble against the Browns in addition to being intercepted on both of his pass attempts. He had three touchdowns, two turnovers, and 206 total yards.
Against the Jaguars, Goff recorded 433 total yards, four touchdowns, and no turnovers. Putting aside the uniqueness of Hill’s overall performance, there is a compelling case to be made that Goff’s performance in Week 11 was noticeably superior.
This season, a Lions player has been named Player of the Week almost every week, with one notable exception being Aidan Hutchinson in Week 2.
Goff was so good in Week 11 that it took a special effort from a special guy to prevent him from winning NFC Offensive guy of the Week for the second time this season. In any case, he very likely ought to have received the prize.
