Dawuane Smoot: News, Stats, Bio & More - NBC Sports

In Sunday’s 30-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins, defensive end Dawuane Smoot suffered a wrist injury, further hurting the Buffalo Bills’ defensive line.

Bills coach Sean McDermott announced on Monday that Smoot would be placed on injured reserve and that surgery would be necessary for his injury. Buffalo’s coach is hopeful that Smoot will be able to return this season, but until all post-surgery information is available, there will be uncertainty.

DeWayne Carter, a rookie defensive tackle for the Bills, is already sidelined after undergoing wrist surgery two weeks ago and is on injured reserve.

Smoot joined the Bills as a free agent in the offseason and has already appeared in seven games, including four starts. After spending his first seven seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, he immediately established himself as a key member of Buffalo’s defense.

The game is called on third down by Smoot. Smoot’s awareness and ability to line up everyone before the snap on third down has been a huge asset to Buffalo’s defense, according to Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver earlier this season. The Bills missed Smoot’s presence when he missed two games early in the season due to a groin issue. Smoot has been playing 48% of the snaps when he has been in the lineup, and his versatility gives defensive coordinator Bobby Babich some choices. He can rush from the tackle spot by pushing inside or playing on the edge.

Babich declared on Monday that Smoot had been a fantastic addition. “He plays football really well. His style of playing is a little bit archaic. He is quite intense. He is really physical. You could say he sets the tone. Additionally, it has been essential. Then, in the defensive line room, his seasoned presence has been excellent. incredibly smart player who is good at communicating and comprehending the plan.

McDermott stated that it will be another chance for guys to stand up since Smoot and Carter won’t be available for some time. Carter has been replaced in the last two games by defensive tackle Eli Ankou. Against the Dolphins, Ankou saw more action than veteran Austin Johnson as the Bills attempted to contain Miami’s potent running attack. Last month, Buffalo signed Zion Logue, a rookie defensive tackle, from Atlanta’s practice squad. Although he has participated in two Bills games, he has not played in the previous two.

If general manager Brandon Beane needs someone from outside the building, the Bills might add another defensive lineman during the NFL’s trade deadline on Tuesday. The plan to replace Smoot might be a week-by-week agreement, according to Babich.
