CBS Sports: Steelers Postponed WR Trade Talks With Jets Until After Sunday’s Game

Mike Williams trade rumors: Steelers, Chargers among three suitors emerging for Jets wide receiver - CBSSports.com

There have been talks of the New York Jets dealing a receiver from their room before the deadline ever since they acquired wide receiver Davante Adams in a trade with the Raiders on October 15. Reports state that teams are interested in Garrett Wilson, but might Mike Williams, an eight-year veteran, be the trade casualty?

Several teams, including the Los Angeles Chargers, Williams’ last squad, and the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jets’ opponent in Week 7, are reportedly interested in signing him. The Steelers and the Jets have agreed to postpone any trade talks until after Sunday’s game, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

With a 4-2 record, Pittsburgh is tied for second place in the AFC North with the Ravens; Baltimore is unbeaten in conference play. At 1,001 yards passing, the Steelers rank among the bottom six teams in the league. The team’s best wide receiver, George Pickens (363 receiving yards), is not well-supported by the group. Would Williams’ acquisition provide the team some much-needed experience?

Mike Williams hasn't been seen at New York Jets practices, here's why

Throughout his seven seasons with the Chargers, Williams was an effective receiver. In 2022, two 1,000-yard seasons might have become three if there had been no injuries. He would not play again until 2024 due to an ACL tear sustained in his third game of the 2023 season.

When they signed the free agent in the offseason, the Jets took a gamble on his ability to recover from the injury. He had a poor start, but in a boring passing game, he started to feature more.

Similar issues with airing the ball out are being faced by the Steelers. Mike Tomlin, the head coach, thinks switching quarterbacks will open up the passing game. Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero are reporting that veteran Russell Wilson will replace Justin Fields in the starting lineup for the Week 7 matchup against the Jets. If Wilson returns to his previous level of play and Williams is acquired by the Steelers through trade, the offense might get a big boost.
