Breaking news: Packers close in to sign Titan sensational player in a blockbuster deal to strengthen their offensive line.
After Jordan Love’s knee injury, the Green Bay Packers are currently evaluating their quarterback alternatives. If Love’s recuperation takes longer than anticipated, a seasoned former Pro Bowler may offer some veteran leadership and steadiness in the face of impending uncertainty.
In the waning seconds of the Packers’ Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Love suffered a sprained MCL. This offseason, he inked a $220 million, four-year contract extension with Green Bay, making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the Packers do not want to place Love on injured reserve and anticipate his return at the end of the initial three-to six-week period.
The Packers will likely turn to Malik Willis, whom they acquired just before the season began, if Love is unable to play. As he moves into the backup position, the 2022 third-round selection is expected to perform below average. At the bottom of the depth chart is Sean Clifford.
In a piece on “that should happen” free agent signings, Bleacher Report identified Ryan Tannehill as a viable choice for the Packers.
“The Packers really can’t afford to roll with Willis and Sean Clifford for multiple weeks, and Ryan Tannehill is the best option available on the open market,” Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon stated. “Compared to Clifford and Willis, who have a combined zero experience, the 36-year-old has a ton of experience and put up elite numbers just a few years ago.
Tannehill, who split time between the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans, is an 81-70 career quarterback. Last season, he only participated in eight games and completed 1,616 passes with four touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Though it’s quite unlikely that Love will suit up, the Packers haven’t ruled him out for Week 2.
