Breaking: Pittsburgh Steelers favorite player ruled out due to injury.
Russell Wilson, a former Super Bowl winner, was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the hopes of igniting an offense that led the NFL in fewest points scored. Unfortunately, based on the most recent Steelers injury report, it appears that Wilson’s first start with Pittsburgh will have to wait.
Ever since the opening week of training camp, Russell Wilson has been dealing with a calf ailment. In the final Pittsburgh Steelers preseason game, he still began and had a drive, but perhaps the 35-year-old ought to have taken a nap.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Justin Fields has a far better chance of starting on Sunday than Wilson does. Before deciding on Sunday’s game, the former quarterback for the Seahawks and Broncos will test his calf on Saturday.
However, Fields will start against the Falcons “absent some sort of magic potion,” according to Rapoport.
In addition to receiving extra time with the starting lineup during Wilson’s absences during training camp, Fields completed all of the reps with the starting offense during this week’s practice. Wilson may have a difficult time regaining his job if Fields can manage a potent attack, but the first test is on Sunday. Fields and Wilson are both on one-year contracts.
