With the conclusion of the New York Jets training camp, Haason Reddick will have to decide whether or not to report.

The official start of the New York Jets preseason and the conclusion of training camp fall on Labor Day.

The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement states that training camp lasts until the final Sunday before the opening regular-season game, as ESPN reported on Sunday.

That’s a crucial line in the sand when it comes to the Jets and Haason Reddick, the contract holdout.

The only punishment New York had for Reddick during training camp and the preseason was penalties for missing camp. Those fines were not minor, mind you. A $50,000 daily camp fine is required. Reddick missed all of camp and the preseason due to injury, and ESPN determined that his total fine was $2.05 million.

When this holdout expires, Reddick will have to sign that sizable cheque.

However, the game changes when the Jets play the 49ers on Monday Night Football in their regular-season opener.

Reddick will no longer be fined by the Jets. He will give up a game check if he is absent from the opening game.

Prior to the 2022 season, Reddick inked a three-year, $45 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. The two clubs worked out the financials when they dealt him to the Jets for a draft pick, and the Jets will have to pay Reddick $14.5 million in 2024.

With that knowledge, the math is simple. Every game costs money to the players. To find out what each player receives for each game check, divide the total by 17.

Recall the $50,000 fines? They are insignificant compared to the $852,941 that Reddick will forfeit each game should he fail to report to the Jets.

Joe Douglas, the general manager of the Jets, stated last week that there had not been much discussion about a new contract between Reddick’s camp and himself. He even stated to reporters that the team is expecting him.

The Jets now have greater clout with the regular season beginning just one week away.

His trade resulted from his unwavering desire for a new deal, which he hasn’t wavered since coming to New York. He refused to leave training camp and even made a demand for a different trade. According to Douglas, they attempted to negotiate an extension prior to the trade but were assured that one could be completed.

With 11 sacks, 23 quarterback hits, and 13 tackles for loss in his final season with Philadelphia, he was selected to the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive year.

In the first year of his current contract (2022), he recorded career-highs of 26 quarterback hits and 16 sacks. That season, he also forced an NFL-high five fumbles.

He has collected 51 sacks during the last four years. In that time, the only players with more sacks are Trey Hendrickson (53), Myles Garrett (58), and T.J. Watt (62). He is also one of only seven defensive players in the last ten years to have at least four seasons with ten or more sacks.

During that time, he has also led the NFL in forced fumbles (15) and strip sacks (13).
