Breaking news: The Giants Re-sign Former Star to a One-year Contract in Order to Address Cornerback Needs.
ESPN has learned that veteran cornerback Adoree’ Jackson has re-signed with the New York Giants for a one-year contract. The 28-year-old Jackson has spent the last three seasons as a player with the Giants and has a relationship with Shane Bowen, the team’s new defensive coordinator, from their days together with the Tennessee Titans.
Even though Jackson has been with the Giants for a while, his effectiveness has suffered due to injuries and patchy tackling, which has raised rumors that the organization may let him go.
The Giants made a calculated decision to address their cornerback needs by re-signing him just nine days before their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants were previously exploring Nick McCloud or Cor’Dale Flott as alternatives to second-year starter Deonte Banks at cornerback. The team’s determination to strengthen their defense is demonstrated by the choice to bring Jackson back.
Joe Schoen, general manager, had previously stated that it’s critical to keep assessing and improving every position, with a special emphasis on cornerback depth. Schoen pointed out that because it’s hard to find good cornerbacks, a lot of teams are actively looking to add one. To further strengthen their defensive line, the Giants signed Jackson again and added cornerbacks Duke Shelley and Art Green to their practice squad.
McCloud’s impressive summer performance made him appear to be the front-runner for a starting position prior to Jackson’s re-signing. Because of his versatility, McCloud can play on special teams and in both inside and outside positions. On the other hand, Flott’s quad injury and patchy play, particularly outside, probably had an impact on the Giants’ choice to keep Jackson.
According to Jackson’s performance data from the last campaign, he completed 65% of the passes that were directed at him while defending eight passes. Jackson has played in 83 games, made 77 starts, thrown four interceptions, and scored one touchdown in his seven-year career. Re-signing him is a sign of the Giants’ faith in his track record and room for growth as they get ready for the next NFL season.
