ESPN: 49ers mega star agree to a four-year, $120 million contract extension.
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk agreed to a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, following months of unhappiness, according to reports from ESPN and NFL Network.
Aiyuk had held a “hold-in” during 49ers practices, attracted interest from other clubs, and openly asked to be traded out of San Francisco. As one of the top contenders to acquire Aiyuk in a trade, the Pittsburgh Steelers were granted permission to speak with the 26-year-old about accepting a long-term contract offer.
Long arguing that he should have had a lucrative contract extension to give him more security, Aiyuk declared in March that he was “trying to get what I deserve.”
With that security on Thursday, he tied Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins for the fifth-highest average annual value among receivers, at $30 million annually. Jefferson Justin of the Minnesota Vikings has the highest average annual salary of $35 million.
Prior to the extension, Aiyuk’s rookie deal’s fifth-year team option was set to pay $14.124 million in 2024.
In 16 games in 2023, Aiyuk paced the 49ers with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. In 62 career games (60 starts), he has 269 catches for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was named to the All-Pro second team.
As recently as Wednesday, the situation regarding Aiyuk and the Niners appeared to be dire.
General manager of the 49ers John Lynch declared on Wednesday, “I’m not going to get into our communication again.” “At some point, you gotta play.”
In the event that the contract disagreement is resolved, Aiyuk might be ready to play in the 49ers’ season opener against the New York Jets on September 9.
