Jets QB Mike White reflects on path leading to first career start - Sports Illustrated New York Jets News, Analysis and More

That certainly didn’t take long.

Mike White, a former quarterback for the New York Jets, is back in the AFC East. via Tuesday, August 27, Adam Schefter of ESPN announced via social media that White had agreed to join the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad.

White has now spent the last three seasons with three of the four AFC East clubs, according to Schefter.

White most recently signed a $8 million, two-year contract with the Miami Dolphins. On Sunday, August 25, the team did, however, release him, making him an unrestricted free agent.

There isn’t a QB3 on the Jets roster.
The top two quarterbacks on the Jets’ depth chart are locked in. In 2024, New York will have the oldest quarterback room in football.

The 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers and the 35-year-old Tyrod Taylor give the green and white one of their greatest quarterback rooms ever.

It’s not all sunshine and cream, though. Taylor has had injury concerns throughout his NFL career, while Rodgers recently underwent surgery for a torn Achilles tendon.

The Jets executed a bloodletting rite on Tuesday, August 27, benching every other quarterback on the team. Andrew Peasley and Adrian Martinez both broke up with Gang Green.

This week, there’s a potential that one or both of them will rejoin the practice squad. That being said, even if they succeed, neither player has much NFL experience.

A Missed Potential Opportunity for the Jets
White is continuing his NFL career by joining the Bills practice squad.

There were those in Jets country who hoped he would return to New York with his skills.

The 29-year-old White played for the Jets for four years, from 2019 to 2022. The former Western Kentucky graduate made seven starts and made eight appearances during that run.

At six feet five inches tall and 224 pounds, White is the perfect stature for the role.

The first thing NFL draft expert Lance Zierlein noted about him on film was his “arm talent.” In his pre-draft assessments, he mentioned that White was a former high school pitcher with a fastball that could reach 90 miles per hour.

2023 NFL free agency: Mike White leaves Jets for Dolphins

White’s ability to manage a system has allowed him to make up in spurts for what he lacked in flair.

with 2021, he made history with his first NFL start with the Jets.

In his debut start, White broke the record for the most completions by a quarterback (37). Additionally, Rich Cimini of ESPN reported that he has joined former Carolina Panthers standout Cam Newton (422) as the only players since 1950 to surpass the 400-yard mark in their starting debut.

Even though those numbers were staggering, a closer look tells a different narrative. White simply accepted what the opposition offered him and systematically advanced the Jets down the field in order to score.

The most significant statistic is that White defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, a club who qualified for the Super Bowl that season, in an exciting 34-31 game.

To put it politely aside, White is a quarterback in the NFL. Compared to what the Jets have or will have at that position, that would have been a huge boost.
