Breaking news: Amidst roster cuts, the Giants make a season-ending move on a wide receiver.
As the season draws near, the Giants keep moving.
During Tuesday’s NFL roster cutdown, which involved 53 guys, the New York Giants had to make a few unlucky but necessary decisions. The Giants placed one player on each side of the ball on their injured reserve list.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the two players were linebacker Matthew Adams and wideout Isaiah McKenzie.
Pelissero stated, “WR Isaiah McKenzie was placed by the #Giants on season-ending injured reserve.” “LB Matthew Adams was designated to return and was also placed on IR.”
What effect will this have on New York’s season, and who are these players?
Both decisions will have an impact on the Giants’ roster.
This year, McKenzie, an eighth-year journeyman, moved to New York. Over 93 games and 28 starts, the 5-foot-7, 173-pound player has 152 catches for 1,427 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was a candidate to start for the Giants in their last preseason game as a backup slot receiver and return guy, but he injured his right foot and knee.
There are concerns at the returner position because of McKenzie’s absence, particularly if fellow receiver Gunner Olszewski (questionable) is unable to play in Week 1.
Adams, meanwhile, is a journeyman who joined the team this season. In 85 games and 13 starts, the six-foot, 230-pound player has 98 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, and 2 forced fumbles. Adams, however, is able to recover from his quad injury this year, unlike McKenzie.
Stapleton stated, “At today’s practice, Matthew Adams—who was ultimately placed on short-term IR—was in stretch lines wearing Dexter Lawrence’s 97.” “Dex had on Adams’ 49.” I hope tomorrow they manage to sort out who is who. #Giants100
Carter Coughlin and Dyontae Johnson should both get more opportunities in theory now that Adams is out, but both players are doubtful going into Week 1. If both players are compromised, Darius Muasau, the third-string inside linebacker, might see greater playing time.
