Cowboys, CeeDee Lamb reach extension allowing WR to return for Week 1

After a lengthy months-long stalemate with the Dallas Cowboys, All-Pro receiver CeeDee Lamb is now the second-highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history, trailing only Justin Jefferson.

A four-year, $136 million contract with a $100 million guarantee was reached between Lamb and the Cowboys on Monday, three people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The individuals, who wished to remain anonymous because the extension has not yet been publicized, spoke with the AP.

Lamb did not attend any of the California training camp, having already skipped the required minicamp over the summer. The day Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings agreed to a $140 million contract, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback, marked the beginning of his June absence from the team’s headquarters.

Lamb’s contract extension has an average yearly value of $34 million, which is approximately twice the amount the former Oklahoma standout will make this season in the last year of his rookie contract.

In 2020, the Cowboys were taken aback by Lamb’s availability and decided to select him with the 17th overall pick, even though there wasn’t much of a need at the position.

After being selected five spots down the list, Jefferson had at least 1,400 yards receiving in his first three seasons. Although Lamb wasn’t particularly productive, his 1,749 yards and an NFL-high 135 catches previous season helped him bridge the gap. With 12 touchdowns, Lamb achieved the trifecta of career highs.

The arrangement was reached 13 days prior to Dallas’ September 8 opening against Cleveland. That’s longer than the Cowboys had when, four days prior to the season opener, running back Ezekiel Elliott broke his five-year holdout.

Lamb spent a lot of time with quarterback Dak Prescott before to the Cowboys’ departure for California. Before playing the Browns, the two will have a few more practices to hone their chemistry.
