Breaking news: NFL Shuts Down Washington Commanders’ New Trade Interest in Brandon Aiyuk, fined him $50,000 daily.
Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers are still unable to reach a new contract extension agreement. After skipping OTAs and the required minicamp, the Second Team All-Pro wide receiver has been putting in a lot of work since training camp started. Aiyuk is at training camp, but he isn’t practicing to avoid paying the $50,000 daily punishment that the collective bargaining agreement mandates for holdouts.
Many people are curious as to when and whether an agreement will actually be reached between the two sides as the 2024 NFL regular season draws near. After all, a lot of trade and contract proposals have been made in the last few weeks, but nothing has been accepted for various reasons.
Several Teams Were Willing to Trade with the San Francisco 49ers to Get Brandon Aiyuk
A number of teams were allegedly eager to trade for Aiyuk and offer him the kind of contract extension he desires before to the 2024 NFL Draft. However, San Francisco declined every offer because they were unhappy with the items they received in exchange.
John Lynch, the general manager, was similarly optimistic that Aiyuk and the company might reach some kind of understanding.
It has been months since then. Aiyuk publicly chastised the organization for holding up the talks during that period and mentioned the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders as two alternative teams he would be interested in playing for.
Aiyuk had previously asked for a trade after he and the team could not agree at the start of training camp. He was also granted authority by the 49ers to negotiate contract extensions with other teams.
He has since turned down trade and contract offers from the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots. He was reportedly offered a $32 million contract by New England, but he refused to play with the Patriots’ quarterbacks.
Aiyuk wants to see if he and the 49ers can work out an extension before he accepts a trade, even though the Steelers are still making an offer.
Early in the trade talks with Brandon Aiyuk, the Washington Commanders withdrew.
As was previously noted, Aiyuk stated he might see himself playing for a few clubs this season, including the Commanders. He was a collegiate teammate of Jayden Daniels, the rookie quarterback for Washington.
The Commanders were among the first clubs to withdraw from negotiations when Aiyuk was made available for trade, though, because of San Francisco’s asking price.
However, Washington made the unexpected choice to trade Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week. Despite his poor performance for the Commanders, Dotson was still projected to be the team’s second wide receiver behind Terry McLaurin, a Pro Bowl player.
Now that he was gone, rumors circulated that Washington may reenter the Aiyuk trade negotiations.
However, one NFL analyst does not believe that to be true.
The San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders will not negotiate for Brandon Aiyuk.
In a recent video, Bleacher Report’s James Palmer makes the case that the Commanders will never again participate in trade negotiations with the Aiyuk. He said,
To be honest, I don’t see the Commanders engaging in that kind of exchange. Palmer stated, “You have to give up a player in addition to the cash that you have to give up. That was mentioned in a lengthy conversation. Additionally, some of those things have changed because the 49ers want a player in return. Will the Commanders take action on that? Perhaps. However, it appears that a lot of moving elements must occur. [Aiyuk re-signs with the 49ers] appears plausible. We’re not too far apart.
Though not much has changed in terms of the status of discussions, there has been talk for some time that Aiyuk and the 49ers were getting closer to an agreement.
In addition, it appears that the Steelers are the team that would be most likely to acquire him in a trade.
