Breaking news: Former Detroit Lions super star signed a blockbuster deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
Two weeks after the 49ers released the seasoned tight end, Logan Thomas is back with the team. After one season in Detroit, Thomas signed a contract with the 49ers prior to the summer break, following the team’s inability to retain current Lions tight end Brock Wright in restricted free agency.
Thomas spent his one season in Detroit as a tight end before switching to quarterback. The Arizona Cardinals selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft because he was a standout quarterback at Virginia Tech. During his first season, he played under center for the Cardinals, making two appearances and finishing one out of nine passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. He reappeared with the Buffalo Bills as a tight end after missing three seasons of action, and he showed even more promise at the position in Detroit in 2019.
The 6-foot-6 tight end had a successful four-year career with the Washington Commanders after catching 16 catches for 173 yards and one touchdown with the Lions. Despite what seemed like an ongoing quarterback turnover situation in Washington last season, Thomas managed 55 receptions for 496 yards and four touchdowns.
The Lions are feeling really optimistic about their tight end situation back here in Detroit. Despite the 49ers having a good offseason slate, they were able to retain Wright in town thanks to the play of star second-year option Sam LaPorta. Despite James Mitchell, Parker Hesse, and Sean McKeon vying for slots, Shane Zylstra, who missed the entire previous season, looks to have earned a berth on the squad.
