Breaking: Lions All-Pro tackle was ruled out during practice due to injury.
Penei Sewell, an offensive tackle for the Detroit Lions, departed practice on Wednesday due to a foot injury that might pose a serious problem for the team.
After leaving the field, Sewell—an All-Pro the previous season—was examined by the team’s medical personnel.
Sewell is expected to shield quarterback Jared Goff and facilitate the creation of space for running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs for the Lions, who won the NFC North last year.
Detroit’s final preseason game is scheduled for this Saturday against Pittsburgh.
Sewell, who is beginning his fourth season, has received significant funding from the Lions. In the offseason, he inked a $112 million, four-year contract extension that will keep him with the franchise until 2029.
Sewell was selected No. 7 overall out of Oregon in 2021 by Detroit general manager Brad Holmes with his first pick, and he has lived up to that selection.
Sewell helped the Lions advance to the NFC title game for the first time since the 1991 campaign by starting all three playoff games and fifty regular-season games in the last three years.
