ESPN: College Football Coach accuses Alabama of “illegally” stealing their award-winning starter.
A head coach in college football is not too fond of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Reporter Jed DeMuesy spoke with head football coach Chuck Martin of Miami (Ohio), and on Thursday, a video recording of their conversation was made available online. The two discussed the RedHawks’ squad heading into the 2024 campaign during the conversation.
DeMuesy said that the RedHawks had “lost” their kicker in special teams. Martin then made an intervention.
Martin stated firmly, “He’s at Alabama; we didn’t lose him.” “We are aware of his precise whereabouts. Our kicker was stolen by Alabama. They took our kicker away from us after unlawfully recruiting him. It is a fact.
Graham Nicholson, the Lou Groza Award winner for the top college football kicker the previous year, is the kicker in question. During the previous season, Nicholson was 26/27 (96.3%) on field goal attempts and 35/36 (97.2%) on extra point tries.
The senior kicker committed to Alabama in April after using the transfer portal in the spring.
When questioned about Martin’s allegation on Thursday, Kalen DeBoer, the new head coach of Alabama, pretended to be innocent and said the Tide had only been in touch with a player who had used the transfer site.
Being a mid-major coach is challenging, particularly in football where you have to compete against teams like the Tide, who are said to have payrolls that total millions of dollars.
