Breaking: Cowboys sign in Cardinals’ ‘Explosive Athlete’ Receiver in a blockbuster deal.
An ideal destination for a promising 24-year-old wide receiver would be the Dallas Cowboys.
The main conversation point as the Cowboys progress through their preseason schedule is none other than CeeDee Lamb’s contract situation-related holdout. Not only have the parties not reached a consensus yet, but things have gotten worse after club owner Jerry Jones said there is no “urgency” to close a deal with Lamb.
Although Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones attempted to contain the situation soon after, stating that there is “zero thought process” involved in trading Lamb, it remains an option in the event that the parties are unable to reach a mutual understanding. In one of his five fictitious trades featuring Lamb, Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton suggests that Dallas send Lamb to the Arizona Cardinals in return for wide receiver Michael Wilson and first and third round picks in 2025.
Moton’s thesis is straightforward: if Jalen Tolbert doesn’t perform well in a prominent role this season, the Cowboys could always utilize the first-round pick they gained in this possible deal to get a new star receiver. Wilson is a second-year receiver coming off of a strong rookie year.
Wilson caught 38 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games (12 starts) last season, according to Moton. “While Wilson can be a reliable perimeter option and use his 6’2” and 213-pound size to become a major target in the red zone, he lacks Lamb’s star attributes. If Jalen Tolbert’s stellar offseason doesn’t result in a breakout year, Dallas can utilize the 2025 first-round pick to select a blue-chip wide receiver.
At 6-foot-2 and 213 pounds, Wilson, 24, has exceptional size for a receiver. It’s important to note that Brandin Cooks weighs 193 pounds and stands 5-foot-10, whereas Tolbert is 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds. Put otherwise, the Cowboys lack a physically intimidating wide receiver. Wilson entering the game as a possible speciality red zone weapon would alter that.
In addition to his advantageous physical attributes, Wilson is a “explosive athlete,” according to Derrik Klassen of Bleacher Report, who profiled the former Stanford Cardinal.
Klassen notes that Wilson is “also a fairly explosive athlete, at least in a straight line.” Wilson picks up momentum immediately and rockets off the line for someone his size. Although he doesn’t have the fastest top gear in the class, he makes up for it with speed, reaching the top speed quickly.
