Breaking: The dumpster-fire White Sox have named former Phillie favorite player as their interim manager.
The Chicago White Sox, in last place, named former big-league outfielder Grady Sizemore their temporary manager on Thursday, just hours after firing captain Pedro Grifol due to a historic losing streak that came to an end earlier this week.
After spending the first eight years of his career as a three-time All-Star and Gold Glove center fielder in Cleveland, Sizemore played parts of his final two major league seasons in Philadelphia in 2014 and 2015. Prior to this season, the 42-year-old was brought on as a new major-league coach for Chicago. Now, at 22-89, he assumes command of a White Sox squad securely positioned in the bottom half of Major League Baseball.
The team recently tied an American League record by losing 21 straight games, falling just shy of the current MLB record of 23 straight losses established by the 1961 Phillies. This comes after the team had previously posted a 14-game losing skid that ended in early June. The White Sox ended their losing streak on Tuesday by defeating the A’s, but they were defeated again on Wednesday.
Along with bench coach Charlie Montoyo, third-base coach Eddie Rodriguez, and assistant hitting coach Mike Tosar, Chicago announced the dismissal of Grifol on Thursday morning. Mike Gellinger will serve as assistant hitting coach, Justin Jirschele as third-base coach, and Doug Sisson as bench coach when he joins Sizemore’s staff. A top-to-bottom dumpster fire that has continued throughout the White Sox organization this season is the reason for the shake-up.
Since the Reds signed David Bell prior to the 2019 season, Sizemore is the first former Phillie to assume managerial duties for a major league team. The White Sox said in a statement that they are beginning their hunt for a new permanent manager “immediately” and that a replacement is “expected to be announced after the conclusion of the 2024 season,” so it may not be a long-term position.
