Sad news: Louisville football head coach dies at the age of 59, the university announced.
Steve Kragthorpe, who led Louisville’s football team for three seasons between 2007 and 2009, passed away on Monday at the age of 59, the university announced. Kragthorpe fought Parkinson’s disease for years before passing died.
The veteran college coach spent three seasons at U of L after leading Tulsa for four. In his two head coaching stints, he went 15-21 at Louisville and 29-22 at Tulsa. With two years left on his contract, Kragthorpe guided the Cardinals to victories of 6-6, 5-7, and 4-8 before being let go by athletic director Tom Jurich following the 2009 campaign. In the University of Louisiana’s annual series versus Kentucky, Kragthorpe was defeated in all three of his games: 40-34 in 2007, 27-2 in 2008, and 31-27 in 2009.
Following a year-long hiatus from football, Kragthorpe returned to the game as offensive coordinator at LSU prior to the 2011 campaign. However, he opted to resign before coaching a game following his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Kragthorpe played an off-field role at LSU for a number of years. Kragthorpe held jobs as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M and quarterbacks coach with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills before taking on head coaching roles at colleges. Kragthorpe, a native of Missoula, Montana, was a quarterback for West Texas State and Eastern New Mexico in college.
