What I Can Control!' Daniel Jones Reacts to New York Giants' QB Drama - Athlon Sports

Daniel Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract with the New York Giants in 2023, but the agreement appears risky given that the quarterback played in just six inconsistent games prior to rupturing his ACL last season.

In spite of the uncertainties surrounding Jones’ entry into a crucial 2024 season, co-owner of Big Blue John Mara stated on Thursday that he had no regrets about giving the quarterback a contract extension.

A Case for Why Some are Down on Giants QB Daniel Jones

According to Mara, on the team’s official website, “I’m still happy we gave (Jones) that contract because I thought he played really well for us in ’22.” “He was injured last year, and to be honest, we weren’t blocking anyone when he was playing. So let’s see what he can achieve by giving him a chance with a stronger offensive line and some weapons nearby.

While Mara is right that the Giants lacked playmakers and that last year’s blocking was among the worst in the NFL, Jones’s erratic play, bad throws, and dubious reads made him a less than ideal quarterback for a $40 million salary. Rather than looking to trade up in the 2024 NFL Draft in search of a rookie replacement, general manager Joe Schoen selected dynamic receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6 overall.

“I was anxious about making too many sacrifices to acquire a quarterback, but I was willing to allow (Schoen) to do that if that was their desire,” Mara remarked. “I think that’s going to work out, we decided to stay with Daniel and get him a weapon.”

“I find it difficult to express my expectations,” Mara remarked. “I obviously want to show that I’ve improved much from last year. However, I won’t be making any explicit demands, assurances, or anything of the sort. However, they are aware of my preferences.
