Cubs get bad news on Adbert Alzolay's future - Marquee Sports Network

Manager Craig Counsell said on Thursday that right-hander Adbert Alzolay of the Chicago Cubs will require surgery to treat his broken right forearm.

“He’s seeking second opinions just to determine exactly what and where he’s going to have surgery,” Counsell stated. “We shouldn’t know the answer to that until early next week.

In 2023, the 29-year-old Alzolay made 22 saves out of 25 opportunities, but none after his forearm issue first showed symptoms on August 29. Just five more games were played by the righty, who ended up 2-5 with a 2.67 ERA.

Alzolay had trouble at first this season. In 18 games, he was 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA despite recording four saves and missing four opportunities. On May 13, he was diagnosed with a right flexor strain and placed on the 60-day disabled list. He walked a hitter and allowed Connor Joe to hit a two-run home run at Pittsburgh the day before.

Alzolay attempted to heal the injury, but after giving up two runs on two singles and two walks in one inning on Saturday at Triple-A Iowa, he was forced to withdraw.

Counsell stated, “He just couldn’t get better.” “And when you’re not getting better, you know something’s not right.

“Last year was a pretty good year, but obviously the way this year has played out it’s been frustrating.”
