Breaking: The Phillies make a last-minute move to trade a top MLB outfielder before the deadline.

The Philadelphia Phillies could be done haggling as teams rush to make choices on MLB trade deadline day. Over the past five days, the Major League Baseball team with the best record acquired Austin Hays, an outfielder, and Carlos Estevez, a reliever.

Carlos Estévez was the Phillies' top trade-deadline pitching target. His former coach explains his rise.

Before they made those moves, the Phillies were a strong contender for the World Series, and they should get better with their new players. Though there’s always room for one more, Philly president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is making every effort to make sure the team doesn’t pass up the chance to add a player who can make a significant impact.

Philadelphia doesn’t have many gaps to cover. The Phillies have one of the best and most talented teams in the league thanks to their eight All-Stars and several other players who have received the award in prior seasons. Despite the purchase of Estevez, it is expected that they will attempt to add another bullpen arm before Tuesday’s deadline.

The haul the Phillies paid for Estevez and the three prospects the Houston Astros traded for Yusei Kikuchi show how much pitching has cost this year. Other teams are interested in the Phillies’ prospects, and Dombrowski has never shied away from giving up elite prospects for a surefire big leaguer.

Every MLB trade deadline gives us a shocking deal that no one saw coming. The Phillies probably won’t engage in that type of negotiation on deadline day, but another significant trade for a reliever shouldn’t surprise the Philly fanbase.
