Breaking: New York Yankees Close in to Land ‘Electrifying’ 2023 All-Star Closer in a Blockbuster Deal.

A roster overhaul is required for the New York Yankees before to the July 30 trading deadline. Adding to the bullpen is one thing general manager Brian Cashman has to concentrate on. Is Camilo Doval of the San Francisco Giants a potential target for the Bronx Bombers?

Patrick McAvoy of Sports Illustrated believes that New York would make a “worthy deadline addition” with the “electrifying” reliever. He stated, “Doval’s 4.38 ERA isn’t great this year, but he’s still in the 97th percentile for ground ball percentage, the 97th percentile for whiff percentage, and the 97th percentile for fastball velocity.”

As the deadline approaches, Doval might be a compelling target for contenders, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Nightengale stated, “Teams will jump on 27-year-old closer Camilo Doval, despite his struggles, if the San Francisco Giants sell at the trade deadline.”

This season, Doval has made 17 saves for San Francisco out of 21 chances. But in 37 innings, it has been accompanied by a 4.38 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. That is nothing compared to what he accomplished between 2021 and 2023 to launch his career. Doval has saved 69 games in his first 162.1 innings pitched, with 204 strikeouts, a 2.77 ERA, and a 1.16 WHIP.

The Yankees Would Benefit from Doval in 2024 and Beyond
The Yankees might potentially reap both immediate and long-term rewards if they try to trade for Doval.

With regard to 2024 in particular, he is a hard-throwing reliever with swing-and-miss stuff and a wealth of late-game expertise. He should be paired with Clay Holmes, the current closer for New York, who was just chosen an All-Star for the second time in his career.

Because of Holmes’ current contract status, hypothetically acquiring Doval also becomes a long-term play for the Yankees. This season, he is making $6 million, and in November, he will become a free agent.

Having Doval would provide the Yankees with an instant (and reasonably priced) option for the back end of the bullpen if they decide against re-signing Holmes. The 27-year-old, who will start his first year of arbitration this winter, will make $770K in 2024. Additionally, he may remain under team control until his age-29 campaign in 2027.
