ESPN: New York Giants close in to sign two-time pro bowl champion and Carolina Panthers favorite pass rusher.
Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants is accessible to stream on Max and airs on HBO on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET until July 30.
Football is sometimes thought of as a game of inches, but it’s also a game of statistical fractions and late-round draft picks, it seems.
In a sneak peek for the third installment of Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants, general manager Joe Schoen of the New York Giants disclosed some of the difficulties he had in negotiations with Dan Morgan of the Carolina Panthers in an attempt to finalize a trade for pass rusher Brian Burns.
“Dan, what are we doing? Dan, why do we feel the need to add a seventh?” Schoen stated to Morgan over the phone. Like, come on. Hopefully, you and I will be doing this for a very long time.”
The trade fencing didn’t last very long because Schoen and Morgan are undoubtedly hoping to keep their general manager positions for a long time. Ultimately, in return for 2024 second- and fifth-round selections as well as a 2025 fifth-round pick, Schoen and the G-Men acquired Burns, a two-time Pro Bowler with 46 sacks in five seasons, and a 2024 fifth-round pick.
Schoen comments, “Good doing business with you, buddy,” upon finalizing the trade.
As witnessed in the first episode of the series, Morgan and Schoen’s back and forth for Burns started in the 2024 Senior Bowl. Remarkably, that debut episode revealed Schoen was initially willing to forfeit a first-round pick. That never did materialize, though.
Not long after the call concluded, Schoen vented that Big Blue didn’t have to give up any seventh-round picks, which he and the other front-officers rejoiced.
“Okay, it’s finished,” he declared. “They tried to wear me down to a seventh-round (pick) and a half a sack.”
So far, the Giants’ offseason performance has been a fascinating peeling back of the curtain that has revealed details about Big Blue’s trade for Burns, Daniel Jones’s contract negotiations with Saquon Barkley, and head coach Brian Daboll’s straight-line speed. The latter has been concluded, but there are still plenty more plots to be developed before July when the show airs.
