Unbelievable: Philadelphia 76ers lose three important and most favorite players to the NBA free Agency.
CBS Philadelphia, PA By offering emerging talent Tyrese Maxey a five-year contract and agreeing to a max contract with Paul George, the Philadelphia 76ers have added some significant players thus far in NBA free agency. However, they also lost a few important members of their 2023–24 roster.
Next season, guard De’Anthony Melton and forwards Tobias Harris and Nicolas Batum will play for separate teams.
Harris intends to sign a two-year, $32 million contract with the Detroit Pistons, according to an ESPN story on Monday. ESPN reports that Batum has signed to a two-year, $10.6 million contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. Additionally, according to The Athletic, Melton intends to sign a one-year, $12.8 million contract with the Golden State Warriors in an effort to replace Klay Thompson, who is expected to ink a deal to join the Dallas Mavericks.
Following his acquisition by the Sixers in a trade with the Clippers during the 2018–19 season, Harris has played his entire career in Philadelphia. In the summer of 2019, Harris inked a five-year, $180 million contract with the 76ers, but he never lived up to the high-paying forward position in the NBA.
In 70 games the previous season, Harris averaged 17.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists.
Batum ended up being the most significant player for the Sixers in the trade package that sent James Harden to the Clippers last season. For Nick Nurse’s team, he filled in admirably as the go-to guy in the lineup and took on a variety of offensive and defensive responsibilities.
During the Sixers regular season, Batum participated in 57 games, including 38 starts. His average was 5.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 39% from beyond the arc.
The Sixers defeated the Miami Heat in the NBA Play-In Tournament, and Batum produced the performance of his life to help the team qualify for the playoffs. However, they lost to the New York Knicks in six games.
Melton started 91 games for the Sixers over the previous two seasons, which is well over half of the team’s regular season games. However, he only played 38 games for the team last season due to a back ailment. As they try to assemble a roster, the Sixers will miss Melton’s shooting and backcourt defense.
Melton averaged 10.4 points per game and hit 37.9% from three point range over his two seasons with the organization.
The Sixers also agreed to deals with Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, and Kelly Oubre Jr. in addition to signing George and extending Maxey’s contract.
