J.D. Martinez has two hits in Mets debut

He didn’t hesitate to speak.

Starting this Tuesday night, the New York Mets and New York Yankees will square off in the most recent installment of the Subway Series at Citi Field in an all-New York matchup. For designated hitter JD Martinez, the series is just another day (or days) at work, despite the fact that it is anticipated to generate a great deal of buzz and attention.

“I don’t give that any thought. When the Yankees-Red Sox series was on, they used to do this to me. “Who is pitching and what does he throw?” is how I feel. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Martinez, a former player for the Boston Red Sox, stated, “That is all I care about.”

Over his five seasons with the Red Sox from 2019 to 2021, when he was nominated for three All-Star teams, Martinez has seen a lot of Yankees.

J.D. Martinez's strong debut can't keep Mets from falling to Cardinals

However, when questioned about his thoughts for the upcoming series against his former club, outfielder Harrison Hader took a more serious tone.

Bader added, quoting Puma, “Go out there and kick some a** – that is all there is to it.”

Between 2022 and 2023, Bader played for the Yankees for at least one season. The St. Louis Cardinals traded him to the Bronx in 2022; in exchange, they received Jordan Montgomery. In 2023, the Yankees placed him on waivers, and the Cincinnati Reds later claimed him. Bader hit.237/.274/.353 with seven home runs, 46 RBIs, 19 stolen bases, and a 71 OPS+ in 359 plate appearances in 98 appearances overall for the Yankees. In January of last year, Bader inked a $10.5 million one-year contract with the Mets following a 2023 spell with the Reds.

In the 2024 MLB season thus far, Bader, 30, is hitting.268/.316/.388 with 27 RBIs and four home homers.

The goal for the Mets is to gain momentum.

In the National League East standings, Bader and the Mets continue to lag behind the Philadelphia Phillies by a significant number of games. With a 37-39 record going into their game against the Yankees on Tuesday, the Mets are only fourth in their division and 14 games behind the Phillies, who are leading the NL East.

Why J.D. Martinez is a good fit for Mets at Citi Field

Still, the Mets have been playing well lately. They have won seven straight games during their current 11-game winning streak (9-2). The Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-2 at Wrigley Field in the series finale last Sunday. Their recent success has been largely attributed to their offense. With a.281 batting average and a.853 on-base percentage over the past 15 days, the Mets are actually ranked fourth overall in the major leagues.

In Game 1 of the Subway Series, Sean Manaea will start for the Mets in the mound, while David Peterson will start in Game 2 on Wednesday. So far this season, Peterson has made four starts and is 3-0 with a 3.97 ERA. Conversely, Manaea has a 4-3 record with a 4.16 ERA in 14 starts.

It seems like the Mets are taking advantage of the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers, who have a 52-28 record and are leading the American League East division going into the Mets series, are struggling as they have dropped four of their previous five games. In just his second start of the season, the six-time All-Star Gerrit Cole will get the ball in the first game of the series against the Mets.
