Breaking: UNC football sign in a five-star RB in a blockbuster deal
The running back room on the UNC football team now has some much-needed depth thanks to Mack Brown and the program.
As 2024 approaches, one of the biggest questions facing the UNC football program is the depth at running back.
Although the return of star Omarion Hampton is welcome, there is still some uncertainty regarding the rest of the depth chart.
Charleston French, a JUCO transfer, committed to the UNC football program on Sunday, giving Mack Brown and the Tar Heels more room in their running back area.
French was contacted at the beginning of June by the UNC football department, so his recruitment proceeded very rapidly. The program scheduled an official visit with the 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back after he attended a camp in Chapel Hill.
That visit occurred this past weekend and resulted in North Carolina extending an offer his way. French wasted no time accepting the offer, as he officially stamped himself as a Tar Heel before the trip concluded.
French put together a strong freshman season at Itawamba Community College, running for 924 yards and scoring eight touchdowns. Although he wasn’t heavily recruited in high school, French was a dominant force, scoring a staggering 28 touchdowns during his senior season at Amory High School in Mississippi.
French adds depth to the UNC football team for the current campaign and is a future asset that the team may work to develop. In addition to having three seasons of eligibility left, he is coming to Chapel Hill fresh off a successful redshirt season.
Omarion Hampton will undoubtedly be enjoyed by the UNC football team as long as he is on college, but after his junior season, it is highly likely that he will leave for the NFL. As French is one of those low-risk, high-reward signings, it doesn’t hurt to add another player to battle for carries at the running back position.
