Top Yankees prospect Jasson Domínguez returns to IL due to oblique injury weeks after return from Tommy John surgery - Yahoo Sports

From September 1–9, 2023, it appeared as though the New York Yankees had found their next great outfield player.

Sadly, that’s pretty much all they’ve been able to witness.

According to MLB Pipeline, Jasson Domínguez is the Yankees’ top overall prospect. However, he has experienced injuries frequently and early in his career. Domínguez sustained a torn UCL last year after playing in the Major League Baseball for less than ten days. Following Tommy John surgery, he was sidelined for the remainder of the season.

In mid-May, Domínguez was able to begin a rehab assignment and once more displayed his batting prowess. But because of the Yankees’ MLB roster’s outfield crunch, he was optioned to Triple-A after his rehab assignment.

Dominguez, who is still at Triple-A, has been hit by the injury bug once more.

During a check swing on Saturday, Domínguez experienced a twitching around his left oblique. He was put on the minor league injury list for seven days on Sunday. Sadly, his absence will be for much longer than a week.

Domínguez injured his left oblique on Thursday, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone informed reporters that he will be out for around eight weeks. He won’t be able to do it until late August.

For Domínguez, who has been raking since signing as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2019, this is a serious blow. Dominguez (also known as “The Martian”) hit.258/.303/.677 in eight Major League Baseball games last year, with four home runs, seven RBI, and an OPS of.980.

Dominguez had an OPS of 1.044 while slashing.389/.405/.639 in nine games at Triple-A this season. This year, in 23 minor league games, he hit six home runs with an OPS of 1.014.

Domínguez will now immediately return to the injured list, where he has been for the majority of the previous year. The 21-year-old appears to have unrealized potential, particularly as a slugger, but since moving up the minor league ranks, he has struggled to maintain his health.

The Yankees are hopeful that Domínguez can make it back to Triple-A by the end of August, after which he might be called up in September. They will, however, still have to wait for their rising star for the time being. Fortunately, they have the luxury thanks to the health of their outfield, which consists of Alex Verdugo, Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge.
