ESPN news: Top Defensive Player and Providence Star committed to Sixers
One of the top defensive players in college basketball last season was Devin Carter of Providence. The Sixers could use his toughness, athleticism, and ability to play players ready for instant NBA minutes.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing a number of draft profiles with you, the first of which is this one, in which we’ll all select our top selection, No. 16, to go to Philadelphia.

Potential 2024 NBA Draft Pick Talk: Devin Carter
Although Carter is regarded as a 3-and-D player, there are issues.
On Wednesday, June 26th, and Thursday, June 27th, 2024, the NBA Draft will take place. We won’t be able to rely on our resident draft expert Bryant’s customary in-depth analyses because he has semi-retired from draft scouting. Therefore, this year we will approach our draft coverage a little differently. Before putting it up for discussion among the group, we’ll show some prospects, show some highlight films, and give some general observations.
We’re talking about Devin Carter today. According to NBA.com’s Consensus Mock Draft, he is now drafted by the Sacramento Kings.
NBA Position: Guard
General Information: Junior, 22, participated in Providence. from the Sunshine State.
Measurables: 193.0 pounds, 6’8.75″ wingspan, and 6’2.25″ without shoes.
2023–2024 Season Statistics: (33 games played, 35.3 minutes per game), 19.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.8 SPG, 1.0 BPG, 2.7 TPG, 47.3% FG, 37.7% 3P, 74.9% FT
The intriguing prospect is Devin Carter, the son of former NBA player Anthony Carter. I may be one of the many Kings supporters who will scoff at the very thought of picking another guard, much less one who is tiny. Carter’s ability to use his wingspan to harass opponents and stymie offenses is his greatest asset on defense. The 6’2″ guard Carter pulled down 8.4 rebounds and dished out one block per game. That really is amazing. But as a fan of the Kings, it’s hard to look at Carter’s basic profile and not be struck by how much he looks like Davion Mitchell. Both diminutive guards were standout defenders in college and had a strong season of three-point shooting. Although it was effective in the previous season, Carter’s three-point shot had an unsightly release. Though we all understand that a steady release is more crucial, it’s reasonable to be concerned about the shot’s durability in the NBA given that the player just had one season of strong shooting in college. The translation for the defense worries me as well. Carter’s defensive highlight tape, it seems to me, has a number of blocks where his man drives right by him. Carter has excellent recovery blocks in college, but I’m not sure if he could recover as effectively against NBA players.
Carter’s name being called for the Kings on draft night would surprise me given the present composition of the team’s roster. I believe a trade is imminent if the Kings decide to choose him. The Kings would either be swapping Carter for someone else or moving other guards, including Davion Mitchell.
