Breaking: Jets turned down a big-time deal with the Rams to acquire offensive tackle.
By selecting offensive lineman Olu Fashanu, a superb player from Penn State, the New York Jets filled a crucial need and strengthened a position that had been vulnerable in recent years. Arriving in the NFL after an outstanding college season in which he played 722 snaps, gave up just 10 pressures, and astonishingly, gave up zero sacks, the 21-year-old was selected 11th overall.
ets Use a Key Draft Pick to bolster their offensive line
While concentrating on assembling a roster worthy of a championship, the Jets attracted a lot of trade interest. The Los Angeles Rams made an alluring offer to General Manager Joe Douglas, indicating their intention to advance in the draft.
In the end, the Rams held onto their 19th overall pick and chose Florida State’s Jared Verse, a pass-rusher. However, they had expressed interest in moving up to the 10th pick, which the Jets had given up to acquire Fashanu at the 11th pick.
In order to move up nine positions in the draft and get Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who they believed would improve their offense and maybe improve quarterback Matt Stafford’s protection, the Rams made an offer that included their first and second round selections.
It’s interesting to note that the Jets themselves thought about selecting Bowers in order to give their attack another potent weapon.
But for the Jets, who had a difficult season despite being 30th in pass protection with 50 sacks and 280 pressures allowed, it was critical to prioritize the offensive line. Douglas was adamant that the ailments that beset their line would not recur in 2024, thus investing in Fashanu was a calculated move to ensure long-term security at the tackle position.
