If Darren Waller retires, there may be plenty of possibilities for tight ends.
How much of a part will Daniel Bellinger play for the New York Giants in 2024? Bellinger, a third-year tight end who appears capable of more than the Giants have expected of him in his first two seasons, might not be solely responsible for it.
As we begin our analysis of each player on the Giants’ 90-man roster, let’s talk about Bellinger.
The thin
6 feet 6 inches tall
255 pounds in weight
23 years old
Location: Tight end
Experience: two
Contract: $3 year of a $4,453 million rookie contract with a cap cost of $1.183 million in 2024 and no guaranteed money
Career thus far
Bellinger, selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, ended up playing a larger role than was perhaps expected. Out of the 12 games he participated, he started 11 of them, missing time due to a frightening shattered eye socket. At 85.7%, he caught 30 out of 35 targets.
Bellinger was arguably underutilized in the Giants offense in 2023, primarily as a result of the signing of Darren Waller. In just 28 targets, he caught 25 passes, or 89.3%. In his first six games, Bellinger was only targeted five times. It wasn’t until Week 9 before he was targeted more than once during a game, as Waller was starting a five-game bench stint due to a hamstring ailment.
Bellinger has shown himself to be a capable, if not dynamic, blocker with a wide range of alignment options.
2024 projections
Bellinger stands to gain since he would be the team’s undisputed top tight end if Waller chooses not to play, however it would be surprising if the seasoned player does not retire.
Theo Johnson, who was selected by the Giants in the fourth round, seems to have the build and skill set of an all-around tight end. In due course. It’s still unclear how much Johnson will be able to take in the early stages of his career.
Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz are purely inline blocking alternatives who won’t contribute much as receivers. Maybe the odd man out is Lawrence Cager, a tight end who plays receiver.
The passing attack is expected to be receiver-centric with Malik Nabers and the other wide receivers. However, Bellinger might have a 40–50 reception season if Waller is sidelined and he maintains his health. Bellinger is a third-year tight end.
That is undoubtedly what he is capable of, if not more.
