ESPN: A tough hybrid tight end and fullback at South Alabama is signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that DJ Thomas-Jones, a hybrid tight end and fullback at South Alabama, has agreed to an undrafted free-agent deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After the Steelers were unable to sign a fullback in free agency, Thomas-Jones joins them for the summer. After being released, they tried to sign All-Pro Kyle Juszczyk, but he decided to rejoin the 49ers.
The 6-foot-1, 250-pound Thomas-Jones had a 40-yard sprint time of 4.63 on his pro day. MyCole Pruitt is still a free agent, so Thomas-Jones will step in and contend for snaps alongside Donald Parham and Connor Heyward.
Thomsa-Jones caught 22 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns in 2024. His greatest performance was against Texas State, where he caught five passes for 59 yards.
He began his career at the University of Mississippi before transferring to South Alabama. He started as a fullback in his sophomore season and was the starting tight end for Mobile.
Thomas-Jones was a native of Mobile, and came home to play for South Alabama. Before his output declined in his final year, he had over 200 receiving yards in his sophomore and junior seasons.
