ESPN: A 10-sack star for the Cowboys is linked to an NFL Draft trade rumor.
Some speculated that the Dallas Cowboys’ free agency spending spree may have occurred following the renegotiating of many contracts, but it never materialized. Dante Fowler Jr., who returned from a one-year stint in Washington when he led them in sacks (10.5), is one of several cost-effective free agents acquired to join Matt Eberflus’s new defensive front. However, given that Fowler has been identified as a Cowboy who may be a trade asset, he may be staying for a while in an unusual move that Pro Football Network is discussing. Dallas will trade Dante for draft capital after signing him?
This is the theory. “After four middling years between Atlanta and Dallas, Dante Fowler Jr. had an extremely productive 10.5 sack season for Washington last year,” according to Pro Football Network. As a result, Fowler may start opposite Micah Parsons in Dallas for a second spell.
However, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Fowler revert to his typical specialized pass rusher position with the presence of rookie edge rushers Sam Williams and Marshawn Kneeland behind him. It’s easy to see Fowler turning into a tradeable asset if Dallas develops its young pass rushers (and maybe adds to the position group in the draft), even though the Cowboys could use assistance there. There is some unpacking to do. It’s unclear how healthy Sam Williams will be after suffering an ACL injury, but Fowler is probably ahead of him in the depth chart. In his debut season, Kneeland showed promise, but he missed six games due to an injury.
Do they both surpass Fowler Jr.? Not in our opinion. The deal with Fowler is the other. a one-year, $6 million contract. According to Over The Cap, Dallas will save $3 million in cap space and have $3 million in dead money if he is moved before June 1st, which is before the draft. If he is released after June 1st, those figures remain the same. Therefore, it is illogical for the Cowboys to deal away a player they recently acquired for draft capital when the Commanders have no interest in keeping him. As a trade bait, Fowler? We scarcely believe it.
