Breaking news: Blue Jays makes a strong statement about the new Yankees bats.
The New York Yankees have exploded offensively to start the 2025 Major League Baseball season. In addition to becoming the first team to hit a home run on three consecutive pitches to begin a game, the Yankees created history on Saturday by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 20-9 (via Sportradar). An offensive performance like this will usually garner notice, but when spectators saw the strange bats some Yankees batters were using up close, the tale took on even greater significance. After conducting a study that revealed more contact was being made closer to the handle, the Yankees created these strange-looking bats by moving more of the wood down the bat and into the label.
Well this is wild… The Yankees made new bats that moved more of the wood into the label so the hardest part of the bat strikes the ball. They have 8 home runs today
March 29, 2025, Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) Despite the controversy, MLB has certified that the bats are legal through Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. The bats have already started to circulate across the league, including to the Toronto Blue Jays, in the wake of this announcement.
In an interview with Odds Shark’s Mitch Bannon, Blue Jays outfielder Davis Schnieder disclosed that he has also been utilizing the new bat technique. “I think it’s blowing up a little more because the Yankees just hit nine home runs,” Schneider said. “But I feel like a lot of people are going to use it, honestly.” About Davis Schneider and the #BlueJays grabbing the brand-new ‘Torpedo’ bats that were the focus of baseball on Saturday: MrCVQ’s https://t.co/h75e8 — March 30, 2025, Mitch Bannon (@MitchBannon)
Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers was also seen with the “torpedo bat” on Sunday. As Schneider predicted, the unique bat is already making its way around MLB. While not every Yankees hitter is using it, Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are among those who are, and the two infielders have combined for four home runs already this season.
