Devin White saga with Eagles takes weird twist following loss to Bucs

Despite starting All-Pro LB Zack Baun for the entire 2024 season, the Philadelphia Eagles aren’t exactly known for their linebacker ability.

In the past, general manager Howie Roseman has favored building through the “trenches” over prioritizing the position. However, a Super Bowl victory this past season perhaps changed his perception of the position’s worth.

Devin White, a former #5 overall choice, is one of the players that many thought could and would have a big influence on the team’s linebacking fortunes, much like Baun did.

White was awarded a one-year, $7.5 million contract earlier that offseason after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he was cut loose in October without playing a single game for the team.

According to sources, veteran linebacker Devin White is joining the #Raiders for a one-year contract.

What Was Devin White’s Story?
Devin White, an off-the-ball linebacker who was formerly regarded as one of the more promising players of his generation, lived up to his high draft expectations in the early going. He was named to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team and helped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win Super Bowl LV in 2020.

Few clubs pursued a guy who was once probably the NFL’s gold standard for inside linebackers when his output began to decline in 2023.

The postseason is Devin White's time to shine

Under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the Eagles thought they could revive White’s career and return him to playing at a high level as a starter.

Unfortunately, it became evident that the former LSU standout had no place after missing time early in the season and losing the starting position to former third-round pick Nakobe Dean during training camp.

What Do The Eagles Look Like At Linebacker?

At least in terms of the starting lineup, the Eagles’ off-the-ball linebacker situation is about as strong going into a season as it has been at any time over the previous ten or more years.

While Nakobe Dean has developed into a solid player in the league, Zack Baun has demonstrated that he is capable of producing performances of All-Pro standard.

But after losing backup linebacker Oren Burks to the Cincinnati Bengals during the most recent free agency period, the depth below those two appears to be severely lacking.

Right present the Eagles sport Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Ben VanSumeren and Dallas Grant, who have a total three NFL starts between them.

To strengthen their alternatives behind their two expected starters, the team may try to add some linebacking depth on days two or three of this year’s NFL draft.

Additionally, there are still a few decently good inside linebacking possibilities available. To protect what has grown to be a vital position on Fangio’s defense from injury or bad play, Philadelphia would want to consider Arizona Cardinal Kyzir White and former Dallas Cowboy Eric Kendricks.
