Breaking news: Lions bolster offensive line depth with re-signing of veteran guard
Kayode Awosika, an offensive lineman, was re-signed by the Detroit Lions on Friday afternoon, demonstrating their continued ability to hold onto important depth players.
The deal’s terms were not revealed.
Awosika has played in 36 games over his three seasons with the Lions and has contributed significantly to the offensive line rotation. On other instances when injuries arose, he has also filled in as a starter.
Awosika played in 11 games last season, seeing time on both the offensive and special teams units. He made two starts and participated in five games on offense.
For his efforts, Pro Football Focus gave him an overall offensive grade of 51.3, including a run-blocking grade of 52.5 and a pass-blocking grade of 59.4. On special teams, he logged 62 snaps.
The Lions acquired the 26-year-old lineman in September 2022, signing him off the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. Awosika entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Buffalo in 2021, signing with the Eagles.
Awosika is anticipated to be considered throughout training camp as a possible contender to compete with Christian Mahogany for the right guard position, as Kevin Zeitler has joined the Tennessee Titans.
