Anthony Rizzo realizes his MLB career might be over: 'I'm surprised' - Marquee Sports Network

This summer, the New York Yankees decided to let go of first baseman Anthony Rizzo. In order to replace the 35-year-old, the Bronx Bombers decided to sign Paul Goldschmidt. Big league clubs have paid Rizzo little to no attention since he became a free agent. Just Baseball’s Michael Monreal recently speculated that Rizzo could be retiring due to the lack of interest he has gotten in free agency.

“Rizzo is a legend on the north side of Chicago, but his production has fallen off a cliff since leaving,” Monreal stated. “Rizzo, who blasted 30 or more home runs in five of his MLB seasons, was once a reliable power threat. However, he only hit eight long balls for the Yankees last season. For a whole season, his slugging percentage of.335 was the lowest of his career. Rizzo’s Baseball Savant page is all blue, which only serves to highlight how much he has regressed from his previous self.

“To make matters worse, Rizzo hasn’t batted above.250 since 2019, and his defense is getting worse too. Although his leadership qualities and wealth of experience could help him land a spot on a major league club, it appears that his days as a regular player are numbered. Rizzo’s retirement appears to be the most likely course of action. Teams aren’t searching for a seasoned first baseman who hit.228/.301/.335 in the previous season. Although there were some rumors that the Yankees would bring Rizzo back, it seems doubtful now that Ben Rice has emerged.

It’s a long road for Rizzo to get back into a big league lineup, and he may be called up to sign for the league minimum if a team has a catastrophic injury to its main first baseman.
